Future of Dental Materials
The future of dental materials is driven by the clinical needs, the scientific progress and the constraints of the healthcare system in each country. Still, amalgam is a reliable and – for the general population – safe and forgiving material. However, amalgam is not tooth coloured and not an adhesive material. Most important: in the Minamata Convention on Mercury (2013) a worldwide phase-down of amalgam was decided. The question for the dental practitioner is: how to cope with that challenge? Apparently, we must rethink our whole treatment philosophy. When to drill/fill or when better monitor/wait? And finally: which restorative material when?

Learning Objective :
  1. Information on the Minamata Convention (MC).
  2. Impact of MC on the decision between invasive vs non-invasive treatment
  3. Under which conditions non-amalgam restorative materials can/should be used
