Biological Failures in Implant Dentistry
The most common biological failures are mucositis and peri-implantitis. Mucositis is described as an inflammatory reaction of the soft tissues surrounding an implant, while peri-implantitis is characterized by inflammatory response associated with the loss of supporting bone around the implant in function. The prevention and treatment of these conditions are a challenge for current implant dentistry. Thus, the aim of this presentation will be to describe new studies on the extension, prevalence and severity of the peri-implant diseases and the influence of the peri-implant keratinized mucosa and lack of plaque control accessibility at the implant-supported prosthesis on marginal bone level and peri-implant tissues health.

Learning Objective :
  1. Describe the clinical features of mucositis and peri-implantitis
  2. Describe the prevalence, extension and severity of peri-implant diseases
  3. Discuss the effect of influence of the peri-implant keratinized mucosa on marginal bone level, peri-implant tissues health and brushing discomfort
