He is also Dean of the School of Dental Medicine of the University of Siena. Dr. Ferrari obtained his MD (1983) from the University of Pisa, DMD from University of Siena and Ph D from ACTA, Nertherlands. He implemented the international Ph D program on Dental materials and their clinical applications and later on Dental Biotechnologies, in the University of Siena. He is also Professor of Restorative Dentistry at Leeds University UK, Research Professor at Tufts University, Boston, and Visiting Professor of Rochester University, Xi’an University. He is Past President of European Federation of Conservative Dentistry, Academy of Dental Materials and Continental European Division of IADR. Dr. Ferrari has published over 350 research papers, has 1 patent and other 2 pending applications. His research focuses was for a long time on bonding, resin composites and reinforced restorative materials, and then on zirconia, lithium disilicate, luting materials, and digital dentistry. He sits on Editorial boards of several journals and serves as referee for all major journals in dentistry.
Marginal Seal in Traditional, Adhesive and Digital Dentistry: When is it Clinically Acceptable?
The problem about clinical acceptability of the margins is still an open issue. We, as dentists, are daily pushed by the Industry and socials and media, to adopt ‘new’ clinical procedures and new devices, but often there is a lack of scientific evidence to support them. During the presentation the different ‘hot’ topics of restorative dentistry such as 1. type of preparation of finishing lines (vertical vs horizontal prep), 2. Cervical Margin Relocation, and 3. New available prosthodontic materials and 4. the use IntraOral Scanner to take the final impression of natural abutments will be covered and 5. Bonding/luting indirect restorations, of course, correlate together to provide clinical advices for daily dentistry. Advantages and limits of all above mentioned procedures will be shown, from technical and material point of views and in particular in relation with the periodontal tissues and their clinical behavior and response. It is not possible to get a prosthodontic success without a proper biological integration of periodontal tissues. Recent scientific knowledge and clinical experience will be examined to support  conclusions about what clinical behavior is, right now, indicated.

Learning Objectives :
  1. Limitations to proper use of IntraOral Scanner)
  2. Predictability of Cervical Margin Relocations
  3. Predictability of vertical vs horizontal preparations related to periodontal tissues
  4. Indications and new horizons due to new prosthodontic materials, Luting indirect adhesive restorations
How to Use Intra-Oral Scanners (IOS) in a Safe Modality: Clinical Degrees of Difficulties
In the last ten years IOS and chairside devices have become more and more popular among dentists. Many companies are now producing IOS and the marketing offer is now wide. Many dentists would like to begin using digital dentistry, IOS and chairside devices but often postpone buying them to wait for better and easier-to-use technology and lower costs. However, in the literature, many articles are published on digital dentistry, mainly on basic science evaluations of IOS, and only few are RCTs. Clinically the dentist must know that limitations on taking an impression with IOS can be due to anatomical confounding and how the learning curve can be important in making high quality standardized impressions. Also, the software of the existing scanners are ‘adjusting’ the shots and clinicians need to know how they work.

Learning Objectives :
  1. To know how to approach different clinical cases according to difficulty impressions
  2. To know anatomical confounding factors that can affect the quality of IOS
  3. To know how IOS software works and can ‘help’ clinicians
  4. To know about the ‘learning curve’ for using ios
